ALFONSO RIZO-PATRÓN (1917-2012)

He was born April 9 1917 in Miraflores, Lima Peru. Son of Mining Engineer Antenor Rizo-Patron, and of Mrs. Sara Remy. He married Rosemarie Jane Boylan in New York in 1942 with whom he had seven children, and widowed in 1972. He married Maria Dolores García in 1975. He passed away on the eleventh of August 2012 in Santiago de Surco, Lima, Peru.

Among his multiple professional and scientific research activities, he has originated or contributed to the development of several mining companies and industrial companies among them Pichita Caluga, Colquisiri, Andean Cement and hydroelectric power station of Carpapata in Central Perú. Also he has elaborated decentralized regional development plans such as the hydroelectric project for the second curve of the Mantaro, the Peru-Via Plan and projects for the rational exploitation of the phosphates of Sechura (northern Peru) such as the Preliminary design of the industrial project of Virrilá and patented processes of production of phosphates. From both official and private positions, he has acted in several development and educational institutions, as director (National Institute of Investigation and Mining Development - INIFM - 1951; Fullbright Commission -1968-70); Minister of Development (1959-60); or President (Interministerial Committee for Economic Development, - 1960-61 -; Commission for the industrial complex of Bayóvar - 1967-73; Action for Development 1964 and 1970; Mining Scientific and Technological Institute INCITEMI 1973-75; and Peruvian Institute of Educational Development INPFE 1964-66). 

He has been member of several professional institutions in Peru and the United States (American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers AIMME, American Chemical Society, Society of Engineers of Peru, Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru, American Association for the Advancement of Science AAAS, Geologic Society of Peru, National Geographic Society, Geographical Society of Lima and Peruvian Academy of Engineering). 

His hobbies were wild animals, painting (lions, cocks and bulls), classical music, acoustics (Hi-Fi), Political Economy (technical measurment of the exchange value of currencies) and Cosmology. He was member of several social institutions (National Club of Lima, Jockey Club of Peru and the Nautical Club Santa María del Mar; Mining Club of New York - Chemist's Club - and of the Yachts Club of Lima). 

He had several condecorations (of Peru, Belgium, Holland and Italy).
